A Forward-Deployed Engineer (FDE) is a specialist engineer who works on-site at a customer’s location to embed a product or platform directly into the customer’s operational workflows. The role sits between product engineering and professional services consulting, requiring both technical depth and business process understanding.

Palantir broadly adopted the model in the late 2000s for government, defense, and intelligence engagements, demonstrating that complex data platforms could only achieve their value when integrated at the workflow level — not simply handed over as software. The FDE became a symbol of Palantir’s “we are responsible until it works” culture.

In 2026, Anthropic and OpenAI adopted the model in their Enterprise AI joint ventures, making it an emerging standard approach in AI AI Commercialization.
