“Frontier models” is an industry term for the LLMs that sit at the capability frontier at any given moment. The label captures the latest releases from major labs: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta, Mistral, DeepSeek, Alibaba, Zhipu AI, Moonshot AI, and others.

As of 2026, closed-source frontier models (Claude Opus 4.7, GPT-5.5, Gemini Ultra) and open-source counterparts (DeepSeek V4 Pro, Gemma 4, Qwen 3.5, Llama 4, GLM-5) are running neck-and-neck on benchmarks like SWE-Bench, HumanEval, and GAIA — typically within a 1-2 point spread. The discriminating axis has shifted from “open vs. closed” to “licensing terms and choice of inference platform.”
